She majored in finance in college, and after graduation, attended the London School of Economics and took a role working with commodities at a hedge fund in London. She quickly realized that the coffee market was being influenced by people who knew very little about coffee. \u201cIt didn\u2019t make sense to me that people that had never seen a <a href=\"https:\/\/u3coffee.com\/blog\/coffee-glossary\/#coffeetree\">coffee tree<\/a> had the power to change, up or down, the price of coffee just based on their study of the market,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nadine knew she had something unique to offer the industry. She\u2019d grown up in a coffee-producing country, in a family with a history in agriculture, but after years living in the US and the UK, she also had a clear perspective on consumer demand as well. Nadine explains, \u201cWhat I realized is that with all the smaller roasters, we needed to have a way to be completely vertically integrated, so we are the only person between the roaster and the producer\u2026So I moved back to Guatemala.\u201d She founded La Central de Caf\u00e9, an exporting company focused on Guatemalan coffees, which includes its own mill for processing and warehouses located close to their small producers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While initially concentrated only on Guatemala, Nadine&#8217;s company has expanded thanks to customer demand. So it\u2019s really about lifting the producer up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nadine says one of the driving tenets of her business is that they should help ensure their producers are earning a sustainable income from their work. And she\u2019s got the numbers to prove it:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/u3coffee.com\/coffee-shorts\/5-tip-fact-how-many-coffee-trees-do-you-need\/\">One [coffee] tree<\/a> produces around\u20262.5 kilos of <a href=\"https:\/\/u3coffee.com\/blog\/coffee-glossary\/#cherry\">cherries<\/a>, which turns out to be about 1.5 kilos of roasted coffee. That\u2019s around forty cups. So if you drink one cup of coffee a day, you need ten coffee trees to supply you with the coffee you\u2019re drinking\u2026You do have a choice and a vote with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She believes that the more educated consumers become about the <a href=\"https:\/\/u3coffee.com\/coffee-facts\/\">complexity of coffee production<\/a>, the more they\u2019ll understand that \u201cit\u2019s not just a cup of coffee, but that there is a family, a person behind that cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primavera is doing their part to foster that understanding. When the pandemic shut down travel, Primavera put together <a href=\"https:\/\/www.primavera.coffee\/video-voyage\">a series of videos<\/a> that could serve as a virtual visit to origin, showcasing the work, knowledge, and expertise that goes into producing coffee. They also publish a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.primavera.coffee\/transparency\">yearly sustainability report<\/a> to promote transparency across the value chain.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-8 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-7 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two h4\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;\">How Nadine Cultivates Community through Coffee<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-13\"><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nadine is focused on supporting producers and helping them create viable, sustainable businesses to support their families and their communities. \u201cWe don\u2019t just come during the harvest, buy the coffee, and leave the rest of the year,\u201d she says. \u201cSo that\u2019s one of the key things that makes us different, that we\u2019re truly trying to change, and by doing that, we are ensuring that coffee is sustainable for the long-term as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of her favorite examples of this investment in their producers came through her work with the Chain Collaborative, a nonprofit that supports communities in coffee producing areas. They asked their farmers what resource would be most helpful\u2014the answer wasn\u2019t what they expected. \u201cWe said, oh, you know, a nursery, <a href=\"https:\/\/u3coffee.com\/blog\/organic-coffee-vs-regular-coffee\/\">organic fertilizer<\/a>,\u201d she recalls, \u201cand they came up with\u2026that they wanted chickens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By listening to their producers, they were able to find a way to give them the support that would most benefit them. The eggs produce a constant stream of income that helps coffee farmers ride out the volatility of the coffee market. It also provides their rural community with easier access to a source of nutritious food. Within a few months, they\u2019d provided the community with more than 300 chickens.
