Discover how to transform four of your favorite classic coffee cocktails with unexpected modern twists!

Unlock the secrets to crafting boozy coffee recipes that impress, from decadent White Russians and Irish Coffees to crisp Espresso Martinis and Carajillos.

We’ll help you elevate your nightcap game with our guide to modernizing classic coffee-based cocktails with surprising ingredients and innovative techniques.

Is there any more satisfying combo than a classic coffee cocktail? From the sophisticated buzz of an espresso martini to the warm, comforting hug of an Irish coffee, these drinks have stood the test of time for a reason.

But even the most delightful tried-and-true classics can benefit from a modern, exciting twist. Here at U3 Coffee, we’re passionate about highlighting the best in our coffees, and that includes exploring their potential in the world of mixology. There’s something truly magical about a coffee-based cocktail where the coffee still gets a chance to shine, right? In fact, we recently launched a U3 Espresso Martini mocktail at our Forest Park café!

So grab your shaker and your favorite mug, and let’s dive into some zhushed-up classic coffee drinks that are sure to elevate your favorite nightcap!

Espresso Martini: A Fresh Take on a Sweet Classic

The espresso martini was the brilliant brainchild of British bartender Dick Bradsell. Legend has it that a successful working model sidled up to his bar and requested a drink that would wake her up. He whipped up a combo of vodka, espresso, sugar, and coffee liqueur, and the rest is mixology history!

The smooth, velvety texture, balance of sweet and bitter, and invigorating caffeine kick make it a favorite among coffee lovers and cocktail enthusiasts alike.

The Classic Coffee Drink Foundation:

Traditionally, an espresso martini consists of vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup.

Our Reimagined Coffee-Based Cocktail:

  • For an extra layer of flavor, consider subbing the simple syrup for a splash of hazelnut liqueur or a dash of orange bitters.
  • If you don’t have an espresso maker at home, you don’t have to let that stop you! A shot of rich homemade cold brew concentrate can work beautifully too.
  • For an extra sweet treat, garnish with a few chocolate-covered coffee beans—ours are a collab with Chicago chocolate shop Chocs ’N Boxes—and a dusting of cocoa powder (because let’s be real, coffee and chocolate combos are always the perfect pairing) or brighten it up with and a citrus twist or candied lemon peel.

We recommend a rich dark roast to add complexity and depth. The nutty sweetness and subtle hint of spice in our 1871 Founder’s Blend make it a great option!

Carajillo: Spice and Spirit Reimagined

The origins of this boozy coffee drink are hotly debated—from a drink intended to give Spanish soldiers courage and vigor to a morning mix that helped Catalan workers quickly perk up before a long day of labor. However it first got its start, the Carajillo strikes a beautiful balance between spicy and sweet.

Originally a simple mix to give drinkers an energizing boost, today, the Carajillo is a beloved Mexican aperitif, served as an opportunity to wind down, digest, and engage in after-dinner conversations.

The Classic Coffee Drink Foundation:

Traditionally, a Carajillo consists of espresso and brandy, rum, or Licor 43 (a Spanish liqueur with notes of vanilla and citrus), often served over ice.

Our Reimagined Coffee-Based Cocktail:

  • For a richer, more nuanced base, look for a medium-roast whole bean coffee—the nutty, chocolatey notes will complement the sweetness of the liqueur. We think our Single-Origin Tarrazu Estate roast would make the perfect pairing, and bonus, and we also offer it as a decaf whole bean coffee option, which gives you all the great flavor but will let you rest easy when you’re ready.
  • Instead of the traditional spirits, consider using a high-quality aged tequila or mezcal for a smoky, complex twist.
  • If you like the sound of Licor 43 but worry liqueur is too sweet for your tastes, you can play with creating your own homemade infused liquor. Fill a mason jar with rum, add a couple of cinnamon sticks or vanilla bean pods, and seal up with a lid. Let your creation steep in a cool, dark place for a few days before crafting your handmade cocktail.

Garnish you finished drink with a single star anise pod and a thin slice of crystallized ginger for a warm, aromatic, and extra spicy finish.

White Russian: A Creamy Classic with a Modern Kick

Believe it or not, the history of the White Russian starts in Belgium, not Russia! In the late 1940s, Belgian mixologist Gustave Tops wanted to create a special drink for the American ambassador, Perle Mesta, who was known for her lavish soirees. His creation—a mix of coffee liqueur and vodka—was called a Black Russian, a nod to the fact that the drink relies heavily on vodka, most of which was sourced from Russia at the time.

Later, Tops’s original creation got a smooth update with the addition of heavy cream, and the White Russian was born!

The Classic Coffee Drink Foundation:

Traditionally, a White Russian consists of vodka, coffee liqueur, and heavy cream.

Our Reimagined Coffee-Based Cocktail:

  • The classic version relies on coffee liqueur for the flavor, but we think that adding a shot of actual coffee adds additional depth and drama! We recommend trying our Perfectly Wired blend, brewed as a cold brew concentrate. Its rich, chocolatey notes will shine and will hold their own against the sweet, creamy elements of the drink.
  • Instead of heavy cream, consider using a barista-grade oat milk or a rich coconut cream for a dairy-free, vegan alternative.
  • To add a touch of spice, incorporate a dash of cardamom or cinnamon into the cream before mixing.
  • Take the whole drink back to its beginnings, the simple two-ingredient Black Russian. Play with swapping out the coffee liqueur for shots of cold brew, or keep the coffee liqueur and simply add equal parts cold brew for a richer flavor profile.

Irish Coffee: A Warm Embrace with a Contemporary Edge

In 1943, on a dark and stormy night in Limerick, Ireland, a flight bound for NY had just been turned back and forced to land at Foynes air base. Joe Sheridan, the chef at the port restaurant, took pity on these weary passengers and decided to pull together a drink that would warm them up and calm their nerves—coffee, cream, sugar, and a hearty dose of Irish whisky.

Irish coffee is a true classic, whether it’s served as a tasty aperitif or as a standalone treat. It’s the perfect drink for a cold winter’s day or a cozy night in.

The Classic Coffee Drink Foundation:

Traditionally, Irish coffee is made with hot black coffee, Irish whisky, sugar, and topped with a layer of lightly whipped cream.

Our Reimagined Coffee-Based Cocktail:

  • For a richer, more robust flavor, look for a coffee with bold, smoky notes, which will pair beautifully with the warmth of the whisky and the sweetness of the sugar. We think our Espresso Obsessed has the perfect profile, with notes of dark chocolate, berry, and a hint of smokiness.
  • Instead of traditional sugar, try using brown sugar or a touch of maple syrup for a deeper, more nuanced sweetness.
  • While you can use store-bought whipped cream, making it yourself gives you a chance to add your own personal flair. Lightly whip heavy cream with a touch of vanilla extract, caramel syrup, or a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon.
  • If whisky isn’t really your thing, try subbing it out for bourbon, dark rum, or even tequila for a slightly different flavor profile.

Top 5 Coffee Trends to Watch in 2025

Cold coffee is getting some major upgrades, with trends that go way beyond your traditional iced latte.

Coffee isn’t just a morning pick-me-up anymore—it’s officially a healthy food according to the FDA.

From personalized subscriptions to sustainability to mindful brewing rituals, the future of coffee is all about prioritizing people.

The coffee world is constantly evolving, and 2025 is shaping up to be a particularly exciting year for java lovers. From innovative brewing methods to cafés focused on encouraging mindfulness and community, let’s dive into the top coffee trends that will be percolating in cafés and homes across the globe—from the latest coffee trends and coffee innovations to what’s next in the coffee industry in 2025.

The Latest Coffee Trends: What’s Brewing in 2025?

1. Cold Coffee Reigns Supreme

The thirst for refreshing cold coffee creations will continue to surge, with nitro cold brew and creative cold coffee cocktails leading the charge.

2. Coffee: The New Health Food

Coffee’s reputation as a healthy beverage will be further solidified, with a focus on its antioxidant properties and potential health benefits.

Coffee Innovations 2025: Sustainability and Personalization

3. Sustainability Takes Center Stage

From farm to cup to mug, sustainability will be a driving force in the coffee industry, with a focus on ethical sourcing, environmental responsibility, and fair-trade practices.

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental and social impact of their coffee choices. This year, sustainability will be more than just a buzzword; it will be a core value for coffee businesses and consumers alike.

We’ll see a greater emphasis on ethical sourcing, with roasters working directly with farmers to ensure fair trade prices and sustainably sourced coffees. Transparency in the supply chain will be crucial, with consumers wanting to know where their coffee comes from and how it was produced, and will even extend into a focus on more sustainable coffee brewing methods.

Expect to see more coffee shops adopting eco-friendly practices, from using compostable cups to reducing waste and conserving energy.

4. The Rise of Coffee Subscriptions & Personalized Experiences

Coffee subscriptions and personalized brewing recommendations will become increasingly popular, offering consumers convenience and tailored coffee experiences.

In the age of on-demand services, coffee subscriptions are gaining significant traction. Consumers appreciate the convenience of having their favorite beans delivered directly to their door on a regular basis. This trend is fueled by busy lifestyles and the desire for easy access to high-quality coffee.

Beyond simple delivery, expect to see more sophisticated subscription services emerging. These might include personalized coffee profiles based on taste preferences, curated selections of rare and exotic beans, and even virtual consultations with roasters to help subscribers discover new flavors.

Coffee Industry Trends 2025: Mindfulness, Mental Health, and Maximum Comfort

5. Coffee as a Ritual of Relaxation

Coffee will be increasingly viewed as a tool for relaxation and mindfulness, with a focus on creating a calming and enjoyable brewing and drinking experience.

In our fast-paced world, taking time to savor a good cup of coffee can be a moment of much-needed tranquility. As the popularity of mindfulness practices grows, so does the desire to incorporate mindful moments into everyday routines, including a more mindful approach to our daily coffee ritual.

This year, we’ll see a growing emphasis on the ritual of coffee brewing, with people embracing mindful hand-brewing practices like pour-over and French press methods. It’s not just about the caffeine fix; it’s about taking a moment to slow down, appreciate the aroma, and enjoy the process.

Expect to see cafés creating more easeful atmospheres as well, with comfortable seating, calming music, and a focus on creating a relaxing and inviting space. Think cozy nooks perfect for curling up with a book and a warm cup of coffee and spaces where you can disconnect from the grind and connect with your community. This trend ties in perfectly with the “hygge” lifestyle and the desire for more mindful moments in our day.

Coffee Facts vs Myths: 7 Common Coffee Misconceptions

While many common coffee misconceptions have been debunked, there are still lots of coffee myths to be debunked.

We’re setting the record straight on 7 coffee myths vs facts.

From coffee health myths to outdated storage methods, consider us your unofficial Coffee Myth Busters!

We’ve all heard some pretty wild myths about coffee.

No, there’s no evidence to suggest coffee causes ulcers. (In fact, the FDA recently added coffee to its list of healthy foods! Love that for all of us!) No, coffee can’t cure a hangover. No, a shot of espresso doesn’t have more caffeine than a cup of drip coffee.

And while a lot of those common coffee misconceptions have been debunked pretty thoroughly, there are still plenty of urban legends floating around about our beloved beverage. So, we’re here to set the record straight on seven coffee facts vs myths. Consider us your personal Coffee Myth Busters!

Coffee Myths Debunked

Coffee Myth 1: Coffee gets bitter when it’s burned.

Coffee Myth 2: Coffee dehydrates you.

Coffee Myth 3: Storing your coffee in the freezer keeps it fresh.

Maybe you just felt a core memory unlock: Shoving a giant can of coffee out of the way to find an ice cream sandwich or TV dinner in your parents’ or grandparents’ freezer. Maybe you just felt personally called out because there’s a bag of coffee sitting in your freezer right now. Don’t feel bad—we’ve been there too.

It seems logical enough, right? If you want most foods to last longer, storing them in the freezer is a great strategy. The biggest enemy of coffee flavor is oxidation, and heat leads to faster oxidation. Unfortunately, when it comes to roasted beans, storing your coffee next to your dino nuggets probably does more harm than good.

Coffee beans are intentionally dried as part of the processing and roasting processes; your freezer is a naturally humid place. That means your beans will likely absorb moisture from the freezer environment, destroying the flavorful compounds you’re trying to preserve. Plus, every time you remove your beans from the freezer, they experience temperature fluctuations that can create condensation, which can degrade the beans’ flavorful compounds.

So what’s the best way to store your whole bean coffee? An airtight, opaque coffee storage canister stored in a dry area of your kitchen is the key to protecting your beans’ fresh flavors.

Coffee Myth 4: Coffee comes from large farms.

When you picture a coffee tree farm, what comes to mind? (That’s right, coffee grows on trees. #iykyk) Sprawling fields like in the American Heartland? Dense forests like in the PNW? The expansive vineyards in California? Actually, for the most part, none of the above.

Because of the natural terrain where many coffea Arabica plants thrive, large, industrialized coffee farms simply aren’t an option. For example, Lucas Venturim, commercial director of Café Fazenda Venturim, estimates that 90% of the coffee in his region of Brazil is still harvested by hand because the terrain makes mechanized harvesting almost impossible.

In fact, the majority of the world’s coffee supply comes from small holders; sixty percent of coffee on the market is grown on farms of less than 12 acres!

Those small farms are not only the lifeblood of the coffee industry, they’re also on the leading edge of creating greater sustainability. Smaller farms tend to make use of more sustainable agriculture methods, like agroforestry and shade farming, in an effort to preserve their local ecosystems, which benefits their production and protects their local communities. But small holders are also most acutely affected by the effects of climate change and market fluctuations. That’s one of the many reasons we value sustainability—social, economic, and environmental—in all of our U3 coffees and the ones featured in our U3 Coffee Exchange.

Coffee Myth 5: Dark roast coffee has more caffeine than lighter roasts.

Have you ever wondered if a darker roast coffee packs a stronger caffeine punch? This common misconception might stem from the idea that because the flavors of darker roasts are more intense, they must contain more caffeine. However, the reality is a bit more nuanced.

While it’s true that darker roasts can have a more robust flavor, you can’t taste caffeine, so the two things aren’t connected.

What really determines how much of the beans’ natural caffeine ends up in your cup is actually the brewing method you choose! Jen Apodaca—founder, owner, and head coffee roaster at Mother Tongue Coffee—explains that water extracts caffeine from the beans, so the length of time your grounds are exposed to water is what determines the amount of caffeine in your brew.

So, whether you prefer a light, medium, or dark roast, you can enjoy your coffee without worrying about a caffeine overload.

Coffee Myth 6: Freshly roasted coffee is best.

Freshly brewed coffee is a work of art. Freshly ground coffee is a revelation. So, like freshly baked bread, freshly roasted coffee must be the peak of coffee flavor, right? Actually, no. In fact, even though we can vouch for the fact that freshly roasted coffee smells like a dream come true, you’d probably be surprised at the taste if you brewed it fresh out of the roaster.

The misconception that coffee is best immediately after roasting likely stems from the idea that fresher is always better. However, coffee beans need time to release carbon dioxide, or degas, after roasting. This degassing process can take several days or even weeks, and it’s important, because that trapped carbon dioxide can lead to a sour-tasting cup off coffee. During this time, the beans also have the chance to develop more complex flavors.

How do you know how long you should wait between the coffee roast date and brewing? Ask the experts! Trust us, your roaster or barista has a wealth of knowledge to share, and you’ll make their day by giving them a chance to share what they know!

Coffee Myth 7: Cafés are a 21st-century trend.

Cafés, with their cozy corners and aromatic brews, have captured our hearts for centuries. Yet, many people mistakenly believe that the café culture is a recent phenomenon. This misconception might stem from the rapid growth of independent coffee shops in recent decades.

While café culture is a big part of the story of the third-wave coffee movement, the history of cafés dates back centuries. From the Kiva Han, the earliest recorded coffeehouse in 15th-century Istanbul to the Queen’s Lane Coffee House, founded in 1654 in Oxford, cafés have long been places of social interaction and cultural exchange.

While the modern café may look different, its core purpose remains the same: to provide a space for people to connect, create, and simply enjoy a good cup of coffee. We’re so excited to be part of that rich history with our flagship U3 café in Forest Park!

The Best Coffee and Chocolate Combos for Coffee Fans

The complex flavors of coffee and chocolate pair beautifully, if you know how to balance the unique flavors each brings to the mix.

The key to creating the best coffee and chocolate combos is understanding their overlapping flavor profiles.

Discover delicious coffee and chocolate pairings, tips for finding the best combinations, and unforgettable coffee chocolate recipes!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you may be wracking your brain looking for unique Valentine’s Day gifts for your sweetheart (or just something sweet for yourself—we support it!). If you’ve got a coffee enthusiast in your life, trust us, you can make their day by helping them indulge in some out-of-this-world coffee and chocolate pairings.

The complex flavors of coffee and chocolate intertwine beautifully, creating a symphony of taste that’s greater than the sum of its parts, if you know how to balance the unique flavors each brings to the mix.

Whether you’re thinking of gifting a curated collection of coffee and sweets, putting together a special coffee tasting party for Galentine’s, or just searching for ways to incorporate chocolate flavors into your daily brew, we’ve got everything you need to know to maximize the flavor pairings!

Why Do Coffee and Chocolate Pair So Well?

You’ve probably seen chocolate paired with wine to create a culinary flight, but coffee and chocolate also make a pretty incredible match. The magic lies in the shared compounds in both coffee and chocolate.

Believe it or not, coffee beans and cocoa beans actually have a lot in common. In part that’s because they both start as fruit seeds from trees that thrive in tropical regions—coffee beans come from the cherry of coffee trees, and chocolate starts as seeds in pods on cacao trees. Both coffee and cacao beans go through processing and roasting to prepare them for consumption, and both contain a wealth of antioxidants, which is one of the benefits of drinking coffee and eating chocolate!

Both coffee beans and cocoa beans contain a wealth of flavor compounds, including:

  • Acids: These provide brightness and a refreshing tang.
  • Sugars: These contribute to sweetness and balance.
  • Flavonoids: These contribute to bitterness, creating complexity and depth.
  • Tannins: These contribute to the astringency and mouthfeel.

These overlapping flavor profiles create a harmonious interplay on the palate. The bitterness of coffee can be softened by the sweetness of chocolate, while the richness of chocolate can be brightened by the acidity of coffee.

If you’re looking for a guide to the differences between light, medium, and dark roast coffee, we’ve broken it down in this post.

A Guide to Perfect Coffee & Chocolate Combos

To help you navigate this delicious landscape, here are some of the best coffee and chocolate combos:

1. Light Roast Coffee with Ruby Chocolate

  • Why it Works: Ruby chocolate is a relative newcomer to the chocolate world; first patented in 2012, it’s made using beans specifically selected and specially processed to produce a naturally pink chocolate with a smooth fruity flavor. The bright acidity of light roast coffee plays beautifully with the tart, berry-like sweetness of ruby chocolate.
  • The Coffee: Dessert Oasis’s Peru Germán Carranza is a perfect starting point for this flavor pairing. Its notes of red grape, blackberry, and fudge complement the bright flavors of the ruby chocolate.

2. Light Roast to Medium Roast Coffee with Milk Chocolate:

  • Why It Works: The fruitiness in lighter roast coffees play beautifully against the creamy sweetness of milk chocolate, creating a balanced and approachable pairing. If you really want to level-up this combo, look for a milk chocolate with fruit-forward flavors to highlight the bright flavors of the coffee. Just like coffee, the flavors of chocolates are influenced by conditions at their origin; chocolates sourced from Madagascar and Colombia are both know for their bright, fruity flavors.
  • The Coffee: Our Tarrazu Estate single-origin roast makes for a dreamy pairing; the notes of milk chocolate and caramelized harmonize with the sweetness of milk chocolate while the hint of orange offers a bright, beautiful contrast. In fact, we think this roast pairs so perfectly with chocolate that it’s the one we use in our U3 Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans.

3. Medium Roast Coffee with Milk Chocolate and Nuts:

  • Why It Works: The nutty undertones of medium roast coffee harmonize beautifully with the natural nuttiness often found in milk chocolate. The salty crunch of chocolate-covered almonds or chocolate bars with nuts (like this Milk Chocolate Crushed Hazelnut Bar from our friends at Chocs ’N Boxes).
  • The Coffee: Our Trophy Husband offers a wonderful canvas with its flavors of sweet nuttiness, caramel, and a hint of spice.

4. Medium Roast Coffee with Chocolate Truffles:

  • Why It Works: The smooth, balanced sweetness of a medium roast coffee is the perfect pairing for the rich ganache of a delightful chocolate truffle, like the gorgeous ones our fellow Chicagoans at Vosges Haut Chocolate craft.
  • The Coffee: The buttery caramel flavors of our 1871 Founder’s Blend pair perfectly with the smooth, creaminess of chocolate truffles, and the hint of spice adds a flavorful contrast to the sweetness of the chocolate.

5. Dark Roast Coffee with Dark Chocolate:

  • Why It Works: The robust flavors of the dark roast coffee perfectly complement the intensity of dark chocolate, creating a deeply satisfying and complex pairing.
  • The Coffee: Our Espresso Obsessed is an excellent choice with its notes of dark chocolate, smokiness, and hints of berry.

6. Dark Roast Coffee with Mexican-Style Chocolate:

  • Why It Works: The bold flavors of this coffee can stand up to intensely flavored chocolates, such as those infused with spices, fruits, or even chili peppers like Mexican-style chocolate. The minimal processing in this style of chocolate also creates a granular texture that’s a wonderful complement to the earthiness of a dark roast.
  • The Coffee: Our Perfectly Wired offers a rich foundation of chocolate and nutty toffee with a bright pop of citrus that highlights the spiced flavors of the chocolate.

Coffee & Chocolate Delights: Beyond the Basics

  • Play with Flavors: Don’t be afraid to experiment! Try pairing your coffee with chocolates that feature unique flavor profiles, such as sea salt, orange, or even lavender.
  • Local Delights: We highly recommend exploring local chocolatiers. Their commitment to quality and creativity will elevate your tasting experience, and they’ll be able to make expert recommendations on which of their chocolates will pair best with your favorite coffees.
  • Create a Coffee & Chocolate Tasting Flight: Assemble a selection of coffees and chocolates and invite your loved one to embark on a flavor adventure.
  • Craft a Coffee Chocolate Cocktail: Combine your favorite coffee with chocolate liqueur, cream, and a touch of spice for a decadent and warming beverage or a refreshing cold brew cocktail.

Coffee Chocolate Drink Recipes

Maybe you’re looking to find that perfect coffee and chocolate pairing in a single drink? We’ve got you covered! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Whip Up a Chocolate Cold Foam: If you make cold brew coffee at home, we’ve got some great news: it’s the perfect palate for adding a little bit of rich sweetness! Whip together 2 to 3 tablespoons chocolate sauce and ¼ cup heavy cream, then pour over your cold brew for a coffee chocolate delight!
  • Warm Up with a Hot Chocolate Coffee: Whisk a shot of espresso into your favorite hot chocolate recipe for a sweet treat that combines two of our favorite things!
  • Experiment with a Chocolate Milk Latte: Chocolate milk steams up beautifully, and there are lots of chocolate-flavored non-dairy options (like the one from our friends at Hope and Sesame)!

Coffee and Sweets: The Perfect Pairing is Personal

Ultimately, the best coffee and chocolate pairings are the ones you enjoy most. Don’t be afraid to experiment and discover your own unique preferences.

We hope this guide has inspired you to explore the wonderful world of coffee and chocolate pairings. The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Coffee Blend for Your Taste

Learn how roasters craft harmonious blends by combining different origins, roast levels, and processing methods.

Discover seven factors to consider when choosing a coffee blend, from tasting notes to brewing methods.

Transform your coffee journey with our coffee tasting guide and coffee blend tips!

Coffee roasters are true artists, carefully selecting green coffees and roasting their beans to create unique flavor profiles. They craft masterpieces, whether that’s a single-origin coffee—an acapella solo showcasing the unique characteristics of a specific region and varietal—or a blend—a harmonious symphony of different origins working together to create a complex and balanced composition.

They consider factors like origin, roast level, and flavor notes to achieve the desired taste and spend lots of time cupping to not only get a true sense of the beans’ potential flavors but also decide what combinations and ratios will achieve the most delicious results. Whether you’re a coffee expert or looking for a guide to coffee for beginners, we’ll teach you to think a little like a roaster with this coffee flavor guide!

What Is a Coffee Blend?

When you see the term “blend” on a bag, it means the roast is a mixture of coffee beans from two or more different origins. That could mean anything from coffees from completely different continents to coffees from different microclimates within the same region. This blending process creates a unique flavor profile and allows for a wide range of flavors, from smooth and balanced to bold and complex.

Roasters create blends in one of two ways. Sometimes they mix green coffees from different origins and then roast the entire blend together. Sometimes they roast the different green coffees separately and then mix together the roasted beans.

Roasters create blends for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Consistency: Blending different coffee beans can help to create a more consistent flavor profile, especially when sourcing from various regions or harvests.
  • Complexity: Combining different coffee beans with unique flavor profiles can create a more complex and interesting cup of coffee.
  • Seasonal Offerings: Roasters can create seasonal blends by combining beans from specific harvests or regions.

Coffee Flavor Guide: Understanding Tasting Notes

So how can you choose the best coffee blend to suit your tastes? First you need to know what flavors you’re most drawn to.

What flavors really call out to you when you’re drinking that perfect cup? Do you love something bright and fruity? Do you love coffee that feels rich and heavy on your tongue? Do you like something smooth and nutty? Whether you’re a coffee expert or a beginner, you’ve probably got a solid instinct about the kinds of flavors you prefer. Here are some flavor descriptions to get you thinking:

Common Coffee Tasting Notes

Trust your gut here! Even if you can’t imagine what “woody” or “apple” coffee would taste like, you probably had an automatic reaction to the idea. That’s a good instinct to follow! (But don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new—you never know when a flavor profile will surprise you in the best possible way!)

One more thing to note here: These flavors are all natural products of the beans’ organic compounds and the roasting process. They come from the beans themselves and aren’t flavors that are added on top of the beans. Flavored coffees are made by either infusing beans with extra ingredients or coating them with flavored syrups or oils as part of the roasting process.

How to Choose Coffee Blends: 7 Factors to Consider

Once you know the flavors you love, you can use those preferences to help you decide on blends that will fit your palate. But how can you figure out whether a blend will hit all the right notes for you? Here’s your official cheat sheet: seven of our best coffee blend tips!

1. Coffee Tasting Notes

This is your first stop in your blend research! The roaster has invested time, money, energy, attention, passion, and love in developing a particular flavor profile for their whole bean coffee and bringing that vision to life. So they’re probably going to want to tell you all about it! Many roasters will give you tasting notes right there on the outside bag, and that’s a great place to start in choosing a blend.

  • If you know that you love a rich, nutty coffee, look for keywords like hazelnut, brown sugar, macadamia nut, and toffee.

If you’re looking for something to get you started in your taste-testing, try our Perfectly Wired, with tasting notes of rich chocolate, nutty toffee, and a hint of citrus!

  • If you like something a bit sweet and spicy, look for keywords like cinnamon, clove, marzipan, and milk chocolate.

Check out our 1871 Founder’s Blend, with tasting notes of sweet nuttiness, caramel, and a hint of spice!

  • If you like flavors that are bold, rich, and sweet, look for keywords like dark chocolate, molasses, smoky, and fig.

Try our Espresso Obsessed, with tasting notes of dark chocolate with a bit of smokiness and berries.

2. Coffee Roast Level

The roasting process significantly impacts a coffee bean’s flavor profile, so you’ll want to look for whether the blend is marked as a light, medium, or dark roast coffee. Light roasts carry more of the flavor from the original green coffee, so they’re more likely to be floral or fruity; dark roasts, on the other hand, allow more time for the sugars in the beans to caramelize, creating a fuller body and a more bitter flavor.

  • Light Roast: High acidity, bright flavors, and a delicate body.
  • Medium Roast: Balanced acidity, sweetness, and bitterness, with a medium body.
  • Dark Roast: Low acidity, pronounced bitterness, and a full body.

3. Wash

The way coffee cherries are processed—the method used to remove the flesh, mucilage, and/or skin from the cherries in order to reveal the pit—significantly impacts the final flavor of the coffee. Here are the three main processing methods and what they can tell you about the flavors inside:

  • Washed: This is the most common processing method, where the coffee cherries are fermented for 18–36 hours, then washed to remove all of the pulp, and dried. It results in a clean, bright cup with clear acidity and a focus on more floral flavors.
  • Natural: Also known as the dry process, the coffee cherries are dried whole, with the fruit still intact. This method often results in a heavy body and intense, sweet flavors.
  • Honey Process: This process walks the line between natural and washed. The skin of the coffee cherry is stripped off, along with some of the pulp, but a thin layer of mucilage is left on the bean. This method can produce a wide range of flavors, depending on the level of mucilage left on the beans, but honey-processed beans tend to be sweeter, fruity, and low in acidity.

4. Origin

Knowing a little about the different coffee origins included in the blend can tell you a lot about the flavors it highlights. The altitude, soil, climate, temperature, and growing practices in the area where the coffee produced shapes its flavors. Here are a few examples of how coffee origin can shape its flavor:

  • Costa Rican coffees are known for their bright acidity, fruity notes, and clean finish.
  • Colombian coffees are known for their smooth, balanced flavors with nutty, chocolaty flavors with hints of fruitiness.
  • Ethiopian coffees are known for their bright, complex flavors with notes of berries and florals.
  • Indonesian coffees are earthy and spicy with notes of dark chocolate.

It’s also important to note, though, that each country has unique growing regions, each with their own unique flavor profiles. For example, in Colombia, coffee from the Huila Region, which is known for its high humidity and relatively low temperatures, produces coffees that are sweet and medium-bodied with high acidity, intense aroma, and a fruity, caramelized flavor. Coffees from the Santander region, on the other hand, where the dry climate and many farmer use shade-grown practices, are fuller-bodied, medium acidity, with sweet, herbal notes and hints of citrus.

5. Coffee Species/Varietal

The type of coffee bean used can also significantly impact the flavor profile. Here are the three most common types of coffee beans:

  • Arabica: This is the most widely cultivated coffee bean, known for its complex flavors and high acidity.
  • Robusta: Bold, intense, with characteristic bitterness. Earthy, woody, chocolaty, nutty notes.
  • Liberica: Complex, smoky, woody with hints of dark chocolate, fruit, and even floral notes.

Those three types of coffee beans also produce a number of varietals, each with its own flavor profile. Here are just a few examples from the 120 different varietals:

  • Bourbon: Sweet, balanced, with notes of berries, chocolate, and nuts
  • Pacamara: Complex and full-bodied with notes of chocolate, caramel, and hints of spice
  • Caturra: Bright, fruity, sweet, and clean
  • Gesha: Delicate, smooth, floral, citrus, and tropical fruits

Many roasters will share what types/varietals they’re using in their blends, and in what ratios, so you can use that information to help you get a sense of what flavors might be in the finished roast!

6. Brewing Method

If you’re purchasing a blend to brew at home, keep in mind that the brewing method you use can dramatically affect the flavors of the coffee. For example, pour-over coffee brewing works especially well with coffees that have fruity, acidic flavor profiles. If you love a pulled espresso, on the other hand, blends that include darker roasts with chocolatey, nutty flavors might work better.

Check out our guide for more on brewing different roast profiles: How to Brew Light, Medium & Dark Roast Coffee.

7. Green Coffee Sourcing

Sustainable sourcing is important for so many reasons, but it’s worth noting the company’s values and mission when you choose a blend because it can tell you a lot about the level of thought and intentionality that goes into creating their blends.

Roasters who place value in sourcing that focuses on environmentally, financially, and socially sustainable coffee value their coffee deeply, which means that they tend to be intentional in their roasting practices and blend recipes. When you respect the amount of work it takes to produce amazing coffee, you want to honor it by creating something incredible. A reputable roaster will source high-quality beans and work hard to roast them to perfection.

Finding the Best Coffee Blend

Now that you’ve embarked on a journey to discover the best coffee blend, we hope this guide has equipped with the knowledge you need to make informed decisions! Remember, coffee roasting is an art form, and understanding the various elements at play—from origin and processing to roast level and varietal—empowers you to explore the vast landscape of flavors.

You can also get to know your local roaster and ask them about the flavors in their blends and what they recommend based on what you love most—they love to talk to customers!

Don’t be afraid to experiment! Embrace the opportunity to try single-origin coffees and appreciate their unique characteristics. Sample blends crafted by passionate roasters, noticing how they combine different beans to create a harmonious symphony of flavors.

Here’s one last tip: Your local coffee shop is a treasure trove of knowledge. Talk to your barista or your roaster! They’re coffee enthusiasts who can answer your questions, recommend blends based on your preferences, give you coffee blend tips, and guide you through the exciting world of coffee. After all, sharing the joy of a perfectly brewed cup is what coffee is all about!

  4. Add enough water to the Aeropress to reach the 1.5 mark. Swirl to ensure the coffee is uniformly wet.
  5. Allow to steep for 30 seconds, then insert plunger. Set your Aeropress on top of your mug, and press slowly and smoothly to extract.

Elevate your coffee game with step-by-step guides to French press, cold brew, pour over, and more.

We get it, that first sip of a perfectly brewed cup of coffee is a make-or-break moment in your day. But what happens when your trusty auto drip is on the fritz? How can you make yourself a cup when you’re struck by a sudden craving while away from home? Fear not, fellow coffee connoisseurs—we’ve got you covered! Brewing a fantastic cup of coffee transcends the limitations of an auto-drip machine. In fact, some of the simplest methods can produce truly delightful results.

So let’s embrace your adventurous spirit and dive into the wonderful world of brewing coffee without a coffee maker. From campfire classics to surprisingly sophisticated techniques, we’ll explore a range of methods that cater to every level of coffee enthusiast.

Here are six tried-and-true ways—2 electricity free and 5 electricity optional—to brew without a coffee maker!

Alternative Ways to Make Coffee: Electricity Free

The Cowboy Way: A No-Frills Route to Coffee without a Coffee Maker

Cold Brew: Smooth and Refreshing Coffee without a Machine

Cold brew coffee is a refreshingly simple way to brew coffee without a coffee maker. Made by steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period, cold brew is known for being smooth and less acidic. If you want a full, step-by-step guide to cold brew, check out our post on how to make cold brew at home!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground coffee
  • Water
  • Large jar with a lid
  • Scale
  • Cheesecloth
  • Rubber band
  • Carafe, pitcher, or second jar

Step 1: Measure

Cold brew coffee, by design, produces a more concentrated finished product. We think the ideal coffee-to-water ratio is 1:10. So for every 10 g of water your jar or pitcher holds, you’ll want to measure out 1 g of coffee.

Step 2: Prep

Add your ground coffee and water to the jar, then seal up the jar with the lid. Give your jar a few good swirls to make sure the grounds are fully saturated.

Step 3: Brew

Leave the jar on your counter (it’ll brew faster than if you put the jar in the fridge at this point) for at least 12 hours, and up to 24 hours. Every few hours or so (cold brew is super forgiving!) give the jar a couple of swirls.

Step 4: Filter

Open the lid and cover the jar with cheesecloth, using a rubber band to secure it. Slowly pour the cold brew through the cheesecloth filter into your carafe, pitcher, or second jar.

Step 5: Dilute or Enjoy

Your finished cold brew will be concentrated, so you can dilute it with water, milk, or your favorite milk alternative. One of the beauties of cold brew is that it’s a brewing method, not a requirement for serving! So if cold coffee just really isn’t your thing, you can dilute it with hot water instead of cold for a cozy, warm mug!

Bonus Tip: If you’re a true cold brew fan, we think purchasing a dedicated cold brew pitcher is a worthwhile investment. You’ll get a more effective filter, a mess-free system, and a pitcher that does double-duty on both brewing and storage. Check out our review of what we think is the best cold brew pitcher from Takeya!

Alternative Ways to Make Coffee: Electricity Optional

Maybe your auto-drip machine is out for repairs or maybe you’re just looking to up your hand-brewing game. The beauty of these recipes is that you can make them work with or without electricity. Whether you’re heating your water in a precision electric kettle or a in a pot on a propane camp stove, you’ll have a delicious mug ready to savor!

French Press: A Classic for Rich-Flavored Coffee without a Machine

The French Press, also known as a cafetière, is a fantastic option for those who crave a full-bodied cup of coffee. It’s a relatively simple method that produces consistently delicious results. If you want to really hone your French press technique, check out our U3 Guide to the Perfect French Press.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground coffee (if you’ve got electricity available, we’ll always rave about this incredible burr grinder)
  • Water
  • French press brewer
  • Kettle
  • Scale

Step 1: Measure

We recommend a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio for brewing up the perfect French press. If you’re using a 34 oz. French press, for example, measure out about 60 g of ground coffee. Add the measured grounds to the bottom of the brewer.

Step 2: Heat

Heat your water to just below boiling, between 198°F and 200°F. Aim toward the higher end of the range for light roasts and the lower end for dark roasts.

Step 3: Bloom

Pour half of your brewing water over the grounds. For example, if you’re using a 34 oz French press, add about 450 g of your hot water (just enough to saturate the coffee) and let it sit for 60 seconds. This “blooming” process allows the coffee to release its CO2, resulting in a perfectly extracted cup.

Step 4: Pour

Give your grounds a gentle stir to make sure they’ve been completely saturated, then slowly pour the remaining hot water over the grounds.

Step 5: Brew

Place the lid on the carafe, leaving the plunger in place, but don’t press down yet. Let the coffee steep for 3 minutes.

Step 6: Plunge

Slowly and steadily press the plunger down until it stops. This will filter out the grounds. Then pour yourself a mug and enjoy!

Pour Over: Brewing Elegance for the Discerning Coffee Enthusiast

For coffee aficionados who appreciate a clean cup with nuanced flavors, the pour-over method is a revelation. This technique allows for meticulous control over the brewing process, resulting in a truly exceptional cup. If you’re looking for our ultimate guide to making the perfect Hario V60 pour over, check out our guide here!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Step 1: Measure

A good starting point is a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio. So, for an 8 oz cup, use around 15 g of coffee.

Step 2: Prep

Set your brewer on top of your carafe or mug, then position your filter in the pour-over cone and pre-wet it with hot water. This removes any paper taste and ensures the cone is warm for brewing. Discard the pre-wetting water, then add your grounds

Step 3: Heat

Heat your water to just below boiling, between 198°F and 200°F. Aim toward the higher end of the range for light roasts and the lower end for dark roasts.

Step 3: Bloom

Pour enough water to saturate the grounds—aim for about 3 g of water for every 1 g of coffee. Let it bloom for 30–45 seconds.

Step 4: Pour

Here comes the magic! Using a slow, circular motion, begin pouring the remaining hot water over the grounds. Aim for even saturation, and avoid pouring directly on the filter.

Step 7: Draw Down

Once the stream of brewed coffee turns to a drip, remove the brewer, and enjoy your freshly brewed cup!

Percolator: A Nostalgic Method for Perky Coffee without a Coffee Maker

The percolator, a mainstay in kitchens and breakrooms of yore, offers a unique brewing experience. This method produces a strong, full-bodied coffee with a distinctive taste.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground coffee
  • Water
  • Percolator (electric, stovetop, or enamelware, which is perfect for a camp stove or gas cooktop)
  • Paper filter
  • Heat source (unless you’re using an electric percolator)

Step 1: Fill

Open the lid and remove the basket from the percolator. Add water to the pot—but don’t fill it all the way to the top. Consult your percolator’s manual for the recommended fill level.

Step 1: Measure

Position your filter in the percolator’s basket, then add put the basket back in the pot. Add your ground coffee. You’ll want about 1 Tbsp of coffee for every cup of water.

Step 3: Heat

If you’re using a stovetop percolator, place it on your range and turn the heat to medium; if you’re using an electric percolator, refer to your owner’s manual. As the water heats, it will rise through a tube in the center and disperse over the coffee grounds. This cyclical process is what gives the percolator its name.

Step 5: Brew

Once the percolator starts to sputter and gurgle, that’s your cue. Unlike some coffee makers, stovetop percolators don’t automatically shut off. To avoid over-extraction and bitterness, remove the percolator from the heat source once it starts sputtering. Let the coffee cool for a few minutes before you pour yourself a perky mug!

Moka Pot: A Stovetop Espresso Alternative with a Kick

The Moka pot, a classic of home brewing, creates a strong, concentrated coffee that’s similar to espresso but without the fancy equipment.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground coffee
  • Water
  • Moka pot
  • Heat source

Step 1: Fill

Unscrew the Moka pot and fill the lower chamber with water just below the safety valve. The valve is usually a small relief mechanism on the side of the lower chamber.

Step 2: Measure

Place the funnel filter basket in the upper chamber and fill it with your coffee grounds. You’ll want about 1 Tbsp of ground coffee for each cup of water. Once your coffee is in, screw the upper chamber onto the lower chamber of the pot.

Step 3: Heat

Place the Moka pot on your stovetop over medium heat. As the water heats, pressure will build, forcing the hot water up through the coffee grounds and into the upper chamber.

Step 4: Brew

Once the coffee starts brewing, you’ll hear a gurgling sound. When the sound becomes a sputter, and the upper chamber is mostly full, remove the pot from the heat source. There should still be a little blonde colored coffee left in the bottom chamber—this is normal. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then pour and enjoy!

AeroPress: Quick, Portable, and Flavorful Coffee on Demand

The AeroPress is a versatile brewing device that’s become a favorite among coffee enthusiasts for its speed, convenience, and ability to produce a clean, flavorful cup. It’s particularly well-suited for those who crave a quick caffeine fix or who need to brew coffee away from home.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Step 1: Prep

Add your filter to the AeroPress filter cap and reposition the filter cap in the chamber. Place the brewer on top of your mug. Pre-wet it with hot water to remove any paper taste and warm the chamber for brewing. Discard the pre-wetting water.

Step 2: Measure

Use the handy AeroPress scoop to measure out one scoop (about 2 Tbsp) of ground coffee, and add the grounds to the chamber.

Step 3: Heat

Heat your water to about 185°F.

Step 5: Pour

Slowly pour the hot water over the grounds, aiming for even saturation. Once all the water is poured, stir the mixture gently to ensure even extraction.

Step 6: Brew

Place the plunger on top of the chamber and press down about a half an inch. Wait 60 sec to allow coffee to brew.

Step 7: Press

Press down slowly but firmly with a steady pressure. Don’t force it—a gentle press is all you need. Once you hear a hissing sound, that’s your cue to stop pressing. Remove the brewer and enjoy the finished product!

Planning Your Coffee Tasting Party: Coffee Party Themes

Coffee Tasting Setup

Coffee Tasting Guide: Choosing the Perfect Coffee Beans

The heart of any coffee tasting party is the selection of coffee beans. Variety is key, so choose beans from different origins, roasts, and processing methods; this will allow your guests to experience a wide range of flavors and aromas. If you want to go really bold, you could even consider exploring different coffee bean varieties. But keep in mind that you don’t want to overwhelm their taste buds or their brains, so choose four to six roasts for them to sample during your coffee tasting party.

When selecting coffee beans for your coffee tasting setup, consider the following:

  • Origin: Coffee beans from different regions have unique flavor profiles. Explore beans from countries like Ethiopia, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Colombia to experience the diversity of coffee.
  • Roast Level: The roast level affects the flavor profile of the coffee. Experiment with light, medium, and dark roast coffees to find your favorites.
  • Processing Method: The method used to process coffee beans (e.g., washed, natural, honey) will also influence the flavor. Try beans from different processing methods to compare the differences.

Organizing a coffee tasting party is also a great excuse to get to know your local roasters! Swing by their storefronts and ask them to recommend a roast or two for your event, or chat up the baristas at your favorite cafes and see what they recommend! Ask them questions so that you can share their insights with your guests! Most roasters are overjoyed to be able to share their knowledge and the stories behind their coffees! Here are a few questions to get you started:

  • Where were these beans grown? Knowing the origin of the coffee can help you understand the unique flavor characteristics and the impact of the growing environment, and learning about the producers will help you better appreciate the hard work it takes to create a beautiful roast.
  • What is the processing method used for these beans? Roasters often make very intentional choices about the processing methods used on their green coffee because it helps shape the flavor profile of their roast.
  • What are the primary flavor notes of these beans? This question will give you a starting point for describing the coffee’s taste to your guests.
  • What is the story behind these beans? Ask the roaster about any interesting facts or stories related to the coffee’s origin, production, or journey to your local market.
  • What is your favorite thing about this roast? This question allows the roaster to share their personal insights and passion for the coffee.

By asking these questions, you can gather valuable information to share with your guests at the coffee tasting party, making it a more engaging and informative experience.

Creating an Interactive Coffee Tasting Experience: Coffee Party Tips

To make your coffee tasting party truly memorable, consider these ideas:

Introduce Each Coffee:

As you prepare to brew, tell your guests a little bit about each coffee—origin, roaster, roast level, bean type, and of course any stories you learned from the roaster or barista. You can decide whether you want to share insights about the tasting notes or let your guests taste “blind” and see if they discover the profile the roaster intended.

Coffee Tasting Party Games:

Add a playful element to the event with some lighthearted games that will get your guests interacting and keep things fun! Here are a couple of ideas to get you started

  • Name that Coffee: Give your guests an unmarked list of the tasting notes for all the different coffees you’ll sample. At the end of the night, have each person try to match which coffee corresponds to which flavor profile. Bragging rights go to the person who makes the most correct matches!
  • Coffee Culture Challenge: Come up with some fun prompts like, “If this coffee was a celebrity, who would it be and why?” or “What’s the title of this coffee’s autobiography?” After each tasting round, ask one question and have guests write their answers on slips of paper and drop them in a (clean!) mug. Read the answers out loud, and pick the best answer each round—winner gets a bag of that roast!

Sensory Exploration:

Guide your guests through the process of smelling, slurping, and tasting coffee to identify key flavor notes. Encourage them to use descriptive language to articulate their experiences, which is when your cheat sheet or The Taster’s Wheel can come in handy for getting the conversation rolling.

Keeping It Clean:

To ensure accurate flavor perception, advise your guests to cleanse their palates with water or crackers between tastings, and encourage them to rinse out their tasting cups. On your end, those breaks also give you a chance to thoroughly rinsing your brewer between each coffee.

Enjoy Your Coffee Tasting Party!

Hosting a coffee tasting party is a wonderful way to connect with friends, share your love of coffee, and embark on a flavorful journey of discovery. By following these coffee party tips and choosing the right coffee beans, you can create an unforgettable experience that will leave your guests wanting more. So gather your crew, brew some delicious coffee, and let the tasting begin!

Unveiling 3 Different Types of Coffee Beans

Exploring Coffee Bean Variety

The vast majority of the world’s coffee comes from two species of Coffea plants: Coffea arabica (which produce Arabica beans) and Coffea canefora (which produce Robusta beans).

While today Coffea liberica accounts for less than 2% of coffee production worldwide, at the turn of the twentieth century, Liberica was one of the most prominent types of coffee on the market.

Understanding the key attributes of different types of coffee is a great launching point to understanding the nuances of your coffee’s flavor profile.

At some point you’ve probably picked up a bag of whole bean coffee or a freshly brewed to-go cup and seen the label “100% Arabica Beans.” Ever wondered what that label even means? We promise, it’s not a secret code for coffee experts, and knowing a bit about coffee types can help you make educated choices about the best whole bean coffee for your tastes.

We’re diving deep into three different types of coffee beans and sharing some facts worth knowing—from flavor profiles to caffeine content and costs. So grab a mug and get ready to dive deep into the three main coffee bean varieties!

How Many Types of Coffee Beans Are There?

What Are the 3 Main Types of Coffee?

  1. Arabica: The Smooth Operator

Arabica makes up 60 to 70 percent of the beans on the market, so chances are good that you’ve savored many cups brewed with Arabica beans, which come from the Coffea arabica species. Arabica beans are prized for their complex flavors and delicate nature. However, Coffea arabica is also more susceptible to disease and requires specific growing conditions.

Key Attributes:

  • Flavor Profile: Smooth, sweet, with bright acidity and hints of fruit, chocolate, and nuts. Specific flavors vary by origin and roast.
  • Caffeine Content: Moderate (around 160mg per cup)
  • Origin: Originally from Ethiopia, now cultivated in many tropical regions.
  • Cost: Generally affordable

Other: One of the things that makes Arabica beans so popular in the coffee world is that their naturally delicate flavor profile allows them to reflect the environments in which they’re grown; they develop subtly unique aromas and flavors associated with different regions. They also make a beautiful canvas for highlighting the nuances of different roast profiles, and the moderate caffeine content and bright acidity make for smooth, balanced

2. Robusta: The Bold and the Beautiful

Robusta beans are the second most common type of coffee on the market, accounting for about 30 to 40 percent of global sales. Robusta beans are the product of the Coffea canefora, a species that’s notably hardier than Coffea arabica. In addition to being more disease and pest resistant, Coffea canefora also is less finicky when it comes to growing conditions and produces greater yields more quickly than Coffea arabica plants.

Key Attributes:

  • Flavor Profile: Bold, intense, with characteristic bitterness. Earthy, woody, chocolaty, nutty notes.
  • Caffeine Content: High (around 220mg per cup)
  • Origin: Central and West Africa (though today Vietnam is the largest exporter of Robusta beans)
  • Cost: Generally less expensive than Arabica because of its hardiness, although recently, for a number of reasons, Robusta prices have been trending upward and are tracking closer to the price of Arabica beans
  • Other: Robusta beans are known for their high caffeine content. While the bold, sometimes bitter flavor can be a turn-off for some, these beans shine in certain coffee drinks. For example, those robust notes are less likely to be overpowered by milk and sweeteners, allowing the coffee’s flavor profile to shine through in sweetened coffee drinks, and it can work especially well for espresso, where its greater solubility works beautifully for the quick brewing process and creates a creamier mouthfeel.

3. Liberica: The Rare and Smoky

While Liberica, which is the product of the Coffea liberica species, currently accounts for less than 2 percent of global coffee production, there’s been an increasing interest in this type of coffee. Coffea liberica is known for being a relatively hardy species and is less particular about growing conditions than Coffea arabica. Its trees produce high yields of cherries, although the fruits take longer to mature than Arabica and Robusta, and because the fruit is larger than those other species, it takes more work to yield an equivalent amount of beans.

Key Attributes:

  • Flavor Profile: Complex, smoky, woody with hints of dark chocolate, fruit, and even floral notes.
  • Caffeine Content: Moderate (around 120mg per cup)
  • Origin: West and Central Africa (though today it’s grown primarily in southern and southeast Asia)
  • Cost: Generally more expensive due to rarity and more labor-intensive cultivation
  • Other: While Coffea liberica is indigenous to Africa, many people associate it with southern and southeast Asia. In the 1870s, those regions were hit an outbreak of coffee rust, a parasite that devastated Arabica crops. Liberica, which is more resistant to coffee rust, was introduced to these regions as a potential replacement for Arabica, and around the turn of the 20th century, its sales were comparable to those of Arabica. But because Liberica presents challenges in harvesting (Liberica grows as tall trees that need to be pruned) and processing (Liberica cherries have a naturally thick pulp), and because its unique flavor profile hasn’t been in high demand, Liberica has become a relatively rare species on coffee farms, though its popularity is on the rise.

Wait, Aren’t There 4 Types of Coffee Beans?

Maybe you’ve read some other posts and articles that identify 4 types of coffee beans and include Excelsa on their lists, and you’re wondering why we didn’t include Excelsa on ours. The answer is a bit complicated…

For about 100 years, Excelsa was believed to be its own species of Coffea, but in 2006, it was recategorized as a variety of Liberica. Its scientific name is Coffea liberica var. dewevrei. Excelsa’s distinct flavors, which are tart and fruit-forward, are so different from other Liberica varieties, though, that some people still categorize them as separate from Liberica.

As a variant of Liberica, Excelsa plants grow into tall trees, which need to be pruned frequently, and the fruits mature slowly, making Excelsa expensive to produce. That said, its unique properties, like being naturally lower in caffeine than other types of beans and able to thrive at lower altitudes, have caught the attention of specialty coffee producers, and its distinctive flavors have captured the attention of some specialty coffee roasters as a unique addition to blends.

Conclusion: Embrace Coffee Bean Variety

As climate change continues to impact global coffee production, we may start to see more beans from different Coffea species coming to market. In fact, in 2020, French research group CIRAD brought together 15 coffee experts to cup three wild Coffea species with the hope of encouraging greater biodiversity and long-term sustainability in coffee agriculture. In 2021, Hugh Kelly, the third-place winner at the World Barista Championship, brewed up a Liberica blend, and in 2023, Maya Crowley became the first competitor at the US Barista Championship to brew up a Robusta.

So, there you have it! Armed with this knowledge you’re no longer at the mercy of buzz words on packaging and can make more informed choices when it comes to choosing whole bean coffee to try. Experiment and enjoy!
